May 21st 2024

Year 9 recently took the opportunity to visit the Imperial War Museum in central London recently where they took part in a workshop exploring the Holocaust. As part of this, students were able to interact with digitalised objects each linked to a specific story from the Holocaust. Students also discussed the linguistics of the Holocaust, specifically looking at the various words used to describe the Holocaust such as 'Sho'ah' and 'Khurban' and why different groups may have their own terminology to describe the Holocaust. Students also took the opportunity to explore the IWM's world-renowned Holocaust galleries, which tracks the development of fascism in Germany throughout the 1930s and the events of the Second World War in Europe. Here students were able to investigate real stories of those who experienced the Holocaust first-hand through various primary sources which show the human faces and immense suffering behind the horrific statistics which many of us are aware of. This trip links directly to the year 9 history curriculum, where students have already studied the First World War, the rise of extreme ideologies and the Second World War, as well as students' ongoing study of the Holocaust.
