Physical Education
BackCourse Description
The PE curriculum offered at Gaynes School is both traditional and diverse. The PE department aims for each child to develop their physical literacy and understanding of how to lead a healthy active lifestyle not only through their time in education but into their adults lives. As a department, in a positive and enjoyable learning environment, we aim to develop student’s physical literacy through gaining confidence and competence in a wide range of sports whilst developing their knowledge and understanding of the sports offered.
The facilities available for the delivery of PE are superb. We boast a sports hall, gymnasium, all gymnastic apparatus, a playground and all-weather surface netball/tennis courts. In the winter, the field provides one 11-a-side football pitch, one 9-a-side football pitch and a rugby pitch. In the summer there is an AstroTurf cricket strip, 400m running track, throwing areas and rounders/softball pitches.

Gaynes School takes no responsibility for money or electrical equipment (e.g. phones, music players) left in the changing rooms. Valuable items can be stored safely before the lesson in the school reception office.

Curriculum Overview
As part of our curriculum, students develop an awareness of their bodies, their potentials and their limits, as well as understanding the relationship between a sound body and a sound mind. They will experience fun and enjoyment through a wide range of physical activities and acquire a knowledge and understanding of recreation and the benefits of a healthy active lifestyle. Students develop an awareness of the need for regular exercise and their social, emotional, intellectual and physical development is enhanced through the Physical Education programme. Students are given the opportunity for self-expression through movement and to realise their full potential in the area of skill acquisition. We endeavour to ensure that the PE curriculum is fully inclusive and accessible to all students.
KS3
Curriculum Overview- KS3
During Years 7, 8 and 9 all students have two one-hour lessons of physical education each week. The aims at key stage 3 are for students to develop a wide range of skills and the ability to use tactics, strategies and compositional ideas to perform successfully. When they are performing, they will analyse the situations presented to them and apply into practical decisions. They will reflect on their own and others’ performances, finding appropriate ways to improve them. As a result, they develop the confidence to take part in different physical activities and learn about the value of healthy and active lifestyles. Students will discover what they like to do and what sports they perform strongly in. They will actively seek to get involved in physical activity inside and outside of school, as this will help them make informed choices about lifelong physical activity.

Assessment in PE
All pupils access the broad and balanced curriculum on a carousel basis. Sports are taught in blocks of work, with students spending 6-8 lessons with assessment lessons embedded in. Students are assessed on their skills in both technical and game based practice, alongside their knowledge of rules and tactics for each sport. Students are also assessed through a holistic assessment, ‘Head, Heart and Hands’, which is used to support and asses the development of pupils as an individual in a sporting environment. The grade that students receive for each sport are recorded in student planners and help to support school tracking cycles.
KS4
Course Overview- KS4 GCSE
Students at GCSE follow the AQA GCSE PE course (8582): AQA
Students will participate in 4 x 1 hour lessons a week (1 core PE lesson, 2 GCSE PE practical lessons & 1 GCSE PE theory lesson)
Assessment Components
Assessment in GCSE is spread over two areas:
- Written paper 1 (1 hour 15 minutes): The human body and movement in physical activity and sport. Worth 30% of the total mark.
- Written paper 2 (1 hour 15 minutes): Socio-cultural influences and well-being in physical activity and sport. Worth 30% of the total mark.
- Practical Performance: Worth 40% of the total mark. Students will demonstrate practical performance in three different physical activities in the role of player/performer (one in a team activity, one in an individual activity and a third in either a team or in an individual activity). They will also have to provide analysis and evaluation of performance to bring about improvement in one activity.

Why You Should Consider This Subject For GCSE
Students should consider taking PE if they have a passion for the subject. They must be hard-working and have a love for sport and learning the theoretical side of PE. They should also consider GCSE PE as a subject that works on a number of interpersonal skills such as leadership and teamwork etc.
Future Careers
PE is a subject accepted by employers as a GCSE. It is useful for students who are considering a career that includes any aspect of sport. For example:
Health and fitness
Club and Duty Management;
Sales and Marketing;
Instructing and Coaching;
Consultancy work based on GP referrals - usually with particular sections of the population, e.g. those with diabetes, arthritis;
Osteopathy, Physiotherapy, Naturopathy and Chiropractic;
Lifestyle Consultancy and Nutrition - opportunities are increasing as the sector embraces the concept of wellness.
Sport and recreation
Sport Development, Performance, Administration and Facility Management;
Outdoor Education;
General Management in venues including theme parks, cinemas and tourist attractions;
Outdoor Pursuits;
Sport Media, including writing, PR and marketing;
